9 Tips to Make Your Road Trip More Enjoyable

1. Plan your route and stops

Start your road trip really early, like 5:00 am early. Setting off before the city wakes up gives you a significant advantage. The usually congested streets, filled with people going about their daily routine, are empty during this time.

You can escape the city and reach the highway much faster. This trick is especially useful in large cities with notorious traffic like Mumbai or Bengaluru.

I remember when I lived in Mumbai, going from home to the Mumbai-Pune expressway took at least an hour and a half after 7:30 am, but only 30 minutes if I left at 5 am. Save valuable time by hitting the road early and bypassing the rush hour traffic.

2. Prep the night before

Properly prepare your vehicle the night before your road trip. Avoid last-minute preparations on the morning of your departure, as it can lead to unnecessary trouble.

Make sure your vehicle has a full tank of fuel, the tires are properly inflated, the windscreen washer fluid is topped up, and you have a spare tire and basic puncture repair tools. Ensure all necessary documents like the RC, insurance, PUC, and driving license are in order.

By prepping in advance, you can make the most of an early morning start, cover more distance, and avoid frequent stops. Plus, having everything in order provides peace of mind for a better night's sleep.

3. Pack a sandwich and a bottle of water

When embarking on a road trip, it's important to be prepared with a variety of snacks and essentials to keep everyone satisfied. In addition to packing a snackle box filled with delightful treats, remember to include a tasty sandwich and a bottle of water.

This personalized treasure trove of snacks is perfect for munching on the road. Wrapping the sandwich in foil or storing it in a container will help keep it fresh during the journey.

A bottle of water is essential to stay hydrated throughout the trip. Opt for a reusable bottle to minimize waste and ensure you have access to refreshing water whenever you need it.

4.A pair of sunglasses

Sunglasses serve more than just a stylish purpose. They help us avoid distractions by hiding our eyes from the camera while driving and reduce fatigue.

Opt for polarized sunglasses to minimize glare from other cars and the road, improving visibility and reducing eye strain. If you don't have polarized lenses, a good pair of regular sunglasses still offer some glare protection. Remember to remove them in tunnels and when driving at night. Stay safe and comfortable behind the wheel!

5. Comfortable seating and pillows

Comfort is crucial for an enjoyable road trip. Invest in supportive seat cushions and bring pillows for added comfort during long hours of sitting. Whether it's a neck pillow for napping or a lumbar pillow for back support, these small additions can make a big difference in your overall comfort and enjoyment. Feeling comfortable and well-supported allows you to fully immerse yourself in the journey and create lasting memories along the way.

6. A good playlist

A good playlist is a must for a long drive. When traveling with others, create a playlist that appeals to everyone's taste, even if it includes a few songs you're not crazy about.

It's more enjoyable than one person controlling the music throughout the trip. If you're alone, curate a playlist tailored to your preferences, even if it includes guilty pleasures.

Download songs for offline listening to avoid interruptions due to lack of mobile data. Also, check out the Thrill of Driving podcast for the great company if you're a car enthusiast.

7. Minimise stops

The trick to covering ground quickly is keeping your average speeds up. And to keep your average speeds up, you need to minimise how much you stop. Ideally, plan your stops smartly so you can take care of multiple things in a single stop — food, fuel, loo.

To maximize your road trip efficiency, consolidate your stops. When taking a break to eat, take the opportunity to use the restroom as well. This way, you can potentially eliminate the need for an additional stop shortly after. Similarly, when refueling, consider grabbing a quick bite at a nearby food court.

By minimizing your stops, you'll be able to cover more distance in less time, surprising yourself with how quickly you're making progress on your journey.

8.Plan your stops

If your drive is more than 1000km, you might want to break it up over two days. And if you are doing so, plan your overnight halt accordingly.

One way to save time is by booking a hotel on the highway. That will save you the time spent getting in to the city in the evening, as well as getting out the following morning.

In all our years, and many thousands of kilometers on the road, these are some of the best tricks we’ve learned to keep our road trips enjoyable, safe, and brisk. Most importantly though, don’t forget to wear your seatbelts. Even in the back seat!

9. Capture memories

Capture memories along the way to make your road trip unforgettable. Take photos of scenic landscapes, iconic landmarks, and candid moments with loved ones.

Keep a travel journal or scrapbook to write about experiences and collect mementos. Balancing capturing memories and being present will enhance the joy and adventure of your trip.
